Length of wiring installation

Some EV charger installations are simple, like when the electrical panel is close to where the charger is to be installed, but the further away your electrical panel is from where the EV charger is to be installed the more labour it will require from the electrician who is installing it.

As a general rule of thumb the cost for installing wiring into your home including fishing and using creative wiring methods to avoid drywall repairs and repainting is $30-$60 per meter of wire.

Next, lets talk about the capacity of your electrical panel.

Electrical capacity of your home and enough free spaces in the electrical panel

Even though the type of EV charger being installed and the length and route of the wiring can vary the overall cost, standard EV charger installation pricing is pretty straightforward, unless your home electrical system does not have the capacity for the new charger.

When the electrical company does a quote for you they will determine if your electrical system has enough space to add the EV charger. Check out our article here to see how they determine that, or if you would like to do it yourself.

Home electrical system upgrade costs range from $2000-$8000 and include upgrades to:

  • New electrical panel with more free breaker spaces to fit EV charger breaker
  • New electrical panel to replace an old, outdated electrical panel where it is difficult or impossible to find the circuit breaker for the EV car charger.
  • Upgraded service size from 100 amp to 200 amp to increase the size of your electrical system to fit the charger.
  • Load management system to balance the electrical load of your charger to fit within your electrical systems capacity.

Here is some more information on the cost to upgrade your home electrical service to 200 amp.

Permits

Permits are taken care of by the electrical contractor you will hire to do the job. The cost of the electrical permit is generally dictated by the overall cost and scope of work that your EV charger installation requires. Electrical permits range from $200-$400.
